Lewiston (/ˈluːᵻstən/; officially the City of Lewiston, Maine)[2] is the most central city in the Androscoggin County and the second largest city in Maine. The city has a population of 36,202 and has a population of 1,071 per square mile, making it one of the least densely populated in Maine as of 2015.[3] Located in south-western Maine, the city borders the coastal sideways of the Gulf of Maine and is south of Augusta, and north of Brunswick. It is one-half of the Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan Statistical Area, commonly referred to as "L.A." or "L-A."[4] Lewiston exerts a significant impact upon the diversity, religious variety, commerce, education, and economic power of Maine. It is known for a relatively low cost of living, substantial access to medical care, and an extremely low violent crime rate.[5][6] While the dominant language spoken in the city is English, it is home to the largest French-speaking population in the state; the language is spoken by nearly 15% of locals.[7][8][9]
With a total of 2,441 business establishments,[10] the city has a service-based tertiary economy worth approximately $4.1 billion in gross domestic product (GDP) output, primarily in the natural resources, mining, finance, insurance, real estate, rental/leasing, transportation, and utilities sectors.[11][12] The influx of Somali and Bantu immigrants has created a secondary goods-manufacturing economy that supplements economic growth.[13][14][15] The spread of globailzation and capital/labor flight has made the economy of Lewiston small-scale, underdeveloped, and growing.[15][16] Although 63.3% of the population composes the labour force, 23.2% of the permanent population (excluding college students and those visiting) live in poverty with an average income of $37,500.[17]
Pesticides vary in their effects on bees. Contact pesticides are usually sprayed on plants and can kill bees when they crawl over sprayed surfaces of plants or other areas around it. Systemic pesticides, on the other hand, are usually incorporated into the soil or onto seeds and move up into the stem, leaves, nectar, and pollen of plants.[1]
Of contact pesticides, dust and wettable powder pesticides tend to be more hazardous to bees than solutions or emulsifiable concentrates. When a bee comes in contact with pesticides while foraging, the bee may die immediately without returning to the hive. In this case, the queen bee, brood, and nurse bees are not contaminated and the colony survives. Alternatively, the bee may come into contact with an insecticide and transport it back to the colony in contaminated pollen or nectar or on its body, potentially causing widespread colony death.[2]
