Rodent Control
Mouse and rat control—with a plan for entry points.
Removal is one part of the job. Compare identification, trapping or other control measures, exclusion, monitoring, and cleanup so you know what your proposal covers.
Connect with an independent provider. Confirm address coverage, availability, scope, and price before hiring.

Start with the findings
Ask what is entering and how it gets inside.
Scratching sounds, damaged packaging, and droppings are reasons to investigate, but they do not define the entire job. An inspection should connect the evidence with the animal, the affected spaces, and the openings actually found at the property.
Map the activity
Record sightings, gnawing, damaged food packaging, and the rooms or structures involved. Explain whether evidence is new, repeated, or left from earlier activity.
Define each building
Include attached garages, sheds, storage spaces, attics, and crawl spaces where relevant. Ask which areas are accessible and which need a separate visit.
List access restrictions
Tell the provider about locked spaces, roof access, tenants, pets, and periods when the property is vacant. Arrange responsibility for checking control devices.
Know what you are comparing
Compare removal, repairs, and cleanup separately.
These are questions to discuss with the company performing the work. Methods and included services vary by provider and property.
| Part of the job | Start with this question | Details to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Removal and monitoring | Who checks the devices and records activity? | Confirm placement, visit frequency, animal removal, included visits, and what happens if activity continues. |
| Entry-point repairs | Which confirmed openings will be repaired? | Request photos or an opening map, materials, access requirements, exclusions, and how repairs will be checked. |
| Contamination cleanup | Which areas and materials are included? | Ask about assessment, safe work procedures, disposal, insulation or material replacement, and separate charges. |
Before the appointment
Treat droppings as a cleanup task—not ordinary dust.
CDC advises against sweeping or vacuuming rodent droppings, urine, or nesting material because this can put contaminated particles into the air. Use its current cleanup guidance and ask about professional assistance for heavy contamination or inaccessible areas. A removal quote does not automatically include cleanup.
Read the independent reference →Keep the removal and repair plans connected.
Ask how the company will sequence control work and repairs, check for animals remaining inside, and distinguish continuing activity from a new entry. Keep a written list of repaired and uninspected openings, the next visit date, and callback terms.
Get the complete price in writing.
Confirm inspection fees, covered areas, preparation, return visits, exclusions, payment terms, and any renewal charges. Ask for warranty or retreatment terms separately.
Use the estimate checklist →Common questions
Rodent Control questions.
Does a general pest spray include rodent control?
Do not assume it does. Ask for a specific scope covering the identified rodent, removal or control measures, checks, entry-point work, and any cleanup.
Is sealing gaps enough?
Entry repairs and active indoor rodents may require different steps. Ask the inspector how the plan addresses both and how results will be monitored.
What should a rodent warranty explain?
Request the covered openings or areas, length of coverage, return-visit terms, exclusions, customer responsibilities, and any renewal or repair charges.
