Bird Control & Proofing

Bird control with a plan for access and proofing.

Start with the species, the activity, and the building. Compare assessment, lawful nest work, exclusion, cleanup, and maintenance as separate parts of the proposal.

Connect with an independent provider. Confirm address coverage, availability, scope, and price before hiring.

Start with the findings

A roost, an active nest, and a trapped bird need different responses.

Describe where birds are landing or entering and whether nesting material, eggs, young birds, or trapped animals may be present. Do not assume that installing a barrier or removing a nest can begin immediately. Ask the provider to confirm the species and the appropriate timing before work.

Roosting on a ledge

Record the location, frequency, nearby doors or equipment, and how the space is used. Ask whether a deterrent, access change, or physical exclusion is suitable.

Entry into a structure

Describe vents, roof openings, covered equipment, or other access points. Ask how the provider will check for birds inside before closing an opening.

Nest or young birds

Keep the area undisturbed and explain what is visible from a safe position. Ask who determines nest status and any applicable permit or timing requirements.

Know what you are comparing

Compare the proposed system—not just the product.

These are questions to discuss with the company performing the work. Methods and included services vary by provider and property.

Part of the jobStart with this questionDetails to confirm
Assessment and accessWhich species, surfaces, and openings are involved?Confirm inspection areas, safe-access equipment, nesting status, and any limits on when work can proceed.
Proofing or exclusionHow will the system fit the building and activity?Discuss netting, screening, ledge systems, attachment details, ventilation, access for maintenance, and monitoring.
Cleanup and repairWhat is included after the activity is addressed?Define affected surfaces, cleanup methods, disposal, material repairs, and responsibilities for later maintenance.

Before the appointment

Confirm nest protections before authorizing removal.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service explains that federal protections apply to many migratory birds and their nests, with particular restrictions when eggs or dependent young are present. Requirements depend on the species and circumstances. Have the provider confirm applicable federal, state, and local requirements before disturbing birds or nests.

Plan for the building after installation.

Ask how the proposed work preserves required ventilation and service access. Identify who checks the installation, repairs damage, clears debris, and responds if birds find another route. For managed buildings, coordinate with the person responsible for the roof, equipment, or affected façade.

Get the complete price in writing.

Confirm inspection fees, covered areas, preparation, return visits, exclusions, payment terms, and any renewal charges. Ask for warranty or retreatment terms separately.

Common questions

Bird Control & Proofing questions.

Can any bird nest be removed immediately?

No. Species, nest status, applicable protections, and the circumstances affect what is allowed. Ask for assessment and confirmation of requirements before removal or exclusion.

Will one deterrent work on every building?

Do not assume a product is suitable everywhere. Compare the bird activity, surface, access, attachment method, maintenance needs, and expected limitations of the proposed system.

Does bird control include cleanup and roof repairs?

Not automatically. Request separate scope items for access, nest work, proofing, cleanup, disposal, and repairs, including any work that requires another contractor.

Who performs the work and confirms availability?
